I used the DEM named "Virgin", if you go to my old account, I submitted this aswell, but since it's a nicer peice, and I have the files for it, I decided to also put it on here.
I used Terragen to create this peice.
I also used Photoshop for the touch-ups.

It could be your monitor. It has plenty of contrast on my screen.
I know this doesn't have a lot of contrast on my school's monitor, but black looks gray on there. And black on my monitor looks extremely close to black.
I've always wanted to be able to create digital landscapes like this. You did a good job with this one--the color choices are compelling. Did you arrange the clouds in the same program/style, or were they added differently? It's got a nice feel to it--comforting and impressive at the same time.
